How to get medical help outside our opening hours, what counts as an emergency, and where to go for less urgent needs.
Important: In a life-threatening emergency, dial 999
Chest pain, severe bleeding, breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, stroke symptoms, severe burns or a serious accident. Don't wait.
When the Out of Hours service runs
Weekdays from 6:30pm to 8:00am, and all day at weekends and on bank holidays. Call 111 - calls are free.
For urgent help that isn't a 999 emergency
Call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk. NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobiles.
For mental health crises, call 111 and select option 2. This service is 24/7 and free to call.
A trained adviser will ask a series of questions, sometimes with input from a nurse or doctor, and direct you to the most appropriate care. That might be:
- Self-care advice you can follow at home
- A pharmacist for minor illnesses (see Pharmacy First)
- An out-of-hours GP appointment
- An urgent treatment centre
- A&E if your condition needs hospital care
- An ambulance if it's an emergency

Crewe Urgent Treatment Centre
Leighton Hospital, Middlewich Road, Crewe CW1 4QJ. Open 24 hours. For injuries, illnesses and minor wounds.
NHS 111 online
Quick symptom checker. Tells you what to do next and can arrange a call back from a nurse or doctor if needed.
Local pharmacies
Many minor conditions can be treated by a pharmacist on the same day, including the seven conditions in Pharmacy First.
Mental health crisis line
Call NHS 111 and select the mental health option for 24/7 crisis support. The line is answered by local mental health staff and is for people of all ages, including children and young people.
When the surgery reopens
Out-of-hours services are usually busy and doctors and nurses without your medical record don't have the full picture. Where it's safe to wait until we reopen, we'd ask you to do so. Submit your request through eConsult the moment we're open and a GP will get back to you the same working day.
Bank holidays and Christmas
We're closed on bank holidays and over the Christmas / New Year period. Specific dates each year are published on our Contact page and the global notification banner at the top of every page. Out-of-hours cover runs throughout, and NHS 111 is the entry point.
We also close once a month for protected staff training time. Upcoming dates are on our Staff training closures page, and the same NHS 111 / pharmacy / 999 routes apply during those closures.
