Staff training closures
We close once a month so the whole team can complete mandatory NHS training. Here's what to do if you need help during a closure.
Why we close
NHS England requires every GP practice to set aside a small amount of protected time each month for staff training. The training is mandatory and covers things like safeguarding children and adults, life support, infection control, prescribing safety, and updates on clinical guidance.
The whole team takes part - doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, reception, and administrative staff. The only way to do that effectively is to close the practice for a few hours, usually an afternoon once a month. Exact dates are listed below.
The closure time is funded by NHS England through the GP contract and is part of how we keep patient care safe and up to date.

If you need urgent help during a closure
The same routes apply during a training-closure afternoon as on any other evening or weekend when we are shut:
- For non-emergency help, call NHS 111 or go to 111.nhs.uk. They will assess you and book you an out-of-hours appointment if needed.
- For mental health crises, call 111 and select option 2. Available 24/7, free.
- For a life-threatening emergency, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E.
- For minor illnesses (sore throat, earache, urinary infections), your local pharmacy may be able to help under the Pharmacy First scheme.
Calling the surgery during a closure will route you to a recorded message with the same instructions.
What about prescriptions?
Repeat prescription requests submitted before a closure are still picked up by the prescribing team during a training afternoon, but the normal turnaround applies - please allow 3 working days for any request to be processed, and order in good time before you run out. If you run out of a regular medicine during a closure and can't wait, your local pharmacist may be able to issue an emergency supply. There is usually a small fee.
